Overview of the Route
The Cascade Pine & Hop IPA Trail spans across northern Oregon and central Washington, threading through the world-famous Yakima Valley hop fields and Columbia River Gorge microbreweries. Known globally for pioneering resinous, pine-forward, and explosive citrus India Pale Ales, this 3-day itinerary takes you straight to the heart of hop cultivation.
Day 1: Hood River & Columbia River Gorge
Begin your trek in Hood River, Oregon, where glacial runoff from Mt. Hood provides crisp brewing water. Explore waterfront taprooms featuring fresh-squeezed hop varieties and piney pale ales.
Gorge Timber Ales Brewhouse
Famous for their pine-infused West Coast IPA brewed with freshly picked Cascade and Chinook hops. Sit on the riverfront patio and sample their signature flight paired with artisan soft pretzels.
Recommended Draft: Evergreen Summit West Coast Double IPA (8.2% ABV)
Basalt Ridge Brewing Co.
Cross the Columbia River into Washington to visit a brewery housed in an historic timber mill. Known for crisp malt bills balancing aggressive resinous hop bitterness.
Recommended Draft: Copper Canyon Resin Pale Ale (6.4% ABV)
Day 2: Yakima Valley Hop Fields
Drive northeast into Yakima Valley, where over 70% of total U.S. hops are harvested each autumn. Immerse yourself in the aromas of Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic bines spanning thousands of acres.
Estate Bine Farm & Taphouse
A true farm-to-glass establishment situated directly amidst active hop fields. During harvest season (September-October), watch wet hops move directly from picker machines to the kettle.
Recommended Draft: Unfiltered Harvest Bine IPA (6.8% ABV)
Tasting Notes & Recommended Food Pairings
The heavy hop oils in Northwest IPAs pair magnificently with rich, fatty foods that clean the palate. Match aggressive resinous IPAs with sharp aged cheddar, smoked barbecue pork belly, or spicy wood-fired artisan pizza.
